Dense and vibrant, this unique painting draws you in with its bold colors and lines. There are unexpected bits of delicacy, too, like the vendedora’s lace collar. Canvas shows some wear on close inspection. Plain wooden frame, 1/2” wide. Signed “Fornes”, dated 1957. $300

Bursting Flowers – Oil on wood – 28” x 20”
Does exactly what it says on the tin. Four bursts of color masquerading as flowers. Clearly the work of a very skilled artist; depth and definition are emphasized by the layers of paint and where the artist has chosen to achieve very fine linework by taking a knife and carefully scraping away some of those very same layers. Beautiful wooden frame 4.5” around. Indistinct signature, dated 1963, $450, or buy this together with its sister piece, Vases, Still Life, and get both for $900, saving you a hundred bucks.

One Village, Seven Mountains – Oil on canvas – 26” x 30
This work of outsider art is sure to cause a stir. The brightly-colored landscape will light up any room, while the number and variety of people pop against the background. Signed “Raymond Gallo”, this painting has a strip molded frame to maintain the integrity of the canvas without detracting from the painting itself. Some wear in lower right corner; frame in okay condition with some chips – because the color and style are both so bold, imperfections in the frame are not noticeable when hung on a wall. $200

Black Woman, Seated – Oil on canvas – 27” x 19”
An attractive young woman, eyes slightly cast down, gazes into the distance. Whatever she’s thinking about, it’s clearly serious, and not all about how her outfit coordinates nicely with the blue wall behind her. Signed “Jedon”, this painting’s strip frame means it is ready to hang in your living room, and there’s nothing to detract from the lush colors of the painting itself. $165

Stilt Houses by Moonlight – Oil on Masonite – 24” x 12”
The kaleidoscopic jumble of colorful houses crowding against the water can’t help but elicit a grin from the viewer. The stilt houses themselves are emphasized by the verticality of the painting, and the overall effect is dream-like and a little magical, perhaps because the sky and sea have become indistinguishable. Signed “Lake”, matted and framed. Frame measures 3” wide. $180

Watercolor – Framed – Two Dancers with Fez-Wearing Man – Signed – 14” x 10”
Cloth-covered frame with stain on left side.
I’m not exactly sure if this is a watercolor, though that’s my best guess. I do know that it is a wonderful blur of movement, with thick, bold lines and intense bursts of color; in other words, it really captures the orchestrated frenzy of choreographed dance. The frame is not in great shape, sadly, and the stain on the cloth of the frame looks like oil paint or something similarly stubborn. The painting is signed; to me it looks like “V. Pzthnfe” which probably isn’t right. $18.99

Young Woman with Kerchief and Pink Scarf – Oil – 12″ x 10″ — SOLD

Signed lower-left corner “J. Lader”, marbleized gilded frame.
Someone on Maplewood Online pointed out that this girl looks an awful lot like Winona Ryder, which is spot-on. Maybe you’re more Wino Forever than a Winona fan, but you can’t deny this painting is adorable. She’s very pixie-like and is physically incapable of shoplifting. She’s an attention-getter, and she’ll fetch you her fair share of compliments. $79.99 SOLD

1930s Still Life with Sun and Leaves – Oil – 18″ x 16″

Signed “AG”, antique 4″ wooden frame, oil on panel.
Though she be but little, she is fierce! Shakespeare wasn’t talking about still lifes, I concede, but this small painting packs quite a wallop. For one thing, this is a stunning frame. It projects itself from the wall without overwhelming the painting. While I like the fruit in the foreground, what really strikes the eye here is that vibrant sun in the background, casting a peachy glow on the fruit. The lush green of the leaves on either side make a fine counterpoint to the pinks and yellows of the sun. $74.99

Yellow, Brown, Black and Newsprint Abstract – Collage – 21″ x 17″

Signed “J Feder”, glass plate, narrow black frame with white mat border.
The layering of colored crêpe paper over a three-dimensional ink room creates a wonderful sense of depth while remaining diaphanous and suggestive. The type from the clippings used in the collage looks like it is from the 1950s or 1960s, a subtle retro twist that rewards a curious viewer. $139.99

Bearded Man Smoking Cigarette – Charcoal – 23″ x 19″

Signed “Patti”, glass plate, 4″ oak frame with cloth accent.
This guy oozes charm, and there’s a hint of mystery too. Is he keeping smoke out of his eyes, or wistfully recounting an old memory? At the very least, he has a face that invites the eyes. Sadly, it seems like he’s been through a bit of a rough patch — there’s some dirt beneath the glass, I think on the underside of the pane. But a man like this is rugged; dirt doesn’t hinder him one bit. $89.99
